Margaret Anne Hayes (Maggie)
Margaret was born in Manchester, but brought up in Taunton, Somerset, where she lived with her Mum and Dad and 2 step brothers. Her Dad was a civil engineer, who was killed in action in 1941 while serving with the Royal Engineers in the Middle East, when she was only 9 years old. Inevitably, she was very distressed and that distress was very evident every Remembrance Day. Hence, it is appropriate that her tribute is on this website and any donations go to the Poppy Appeal.
She attended Weirfield School in Taunton, which she loved and was a member of their Old Tauntonians Association.
When she left school she worked as a secretary in a solicitors office in Taunton.
Through a family friend Neil McKinnon, Margaret met her future husband Michael, and they were married in 1955. Michael was a sales representative for the Marley Tile Company in the south-west. In 1959 Michael joined Fibreglass Insulation Ltd (part of the Pilkington Glass Group). This meant a move to Manchester and then to Scotland.
They had 2 sons: Jonathan, born in 1956, and Tim, born in 1960.
In 1963, they moved to Milngavie, just north of Glasgow.
The whole family loved Milngavie. Their house backed onto fields and two large reservoirs. The fields and woodland were an ideal environment for Margaret and Michael’s sons to play outside, something Margaret was quite passionate about.
On arriving in Scotland, Margaret was keen to get to know the neighbours and decided to organise a bonfire night. The boys were sent out to gather wood to fuel the bonfire, a Guy was created Blue Peter style, marshmallows were toasted on the fire, soup and stuffed baked potatoes were provided for all the families and their children. This became an annual event.
Margaret and Michael joined the Scottish Episcopal Church, for many years Michael was the church treasurer and Margaret baked for the Church Coffee Mornings and social events after the Sunday service.
The family enjoyed many summer holidays in the West of Scotland. A favourite was the Isle of Mull, where they enjoyed fishing in their small boat.
Michael and Margaret were keen golfers and members of Milngavie Golf Club.
When the boys had left school Margaret and Michael went on lots of holidays: visiting family; going walking in the Lake District; golfing in Dumfries and enjoying 2 cruises on the QE2.
Michael sadly died in 2008, after a short illness.
Margaret became closer with her golfing friends, enjoyed many a National Trust trip and continued to be active in the Church.
Margaret adored Michael, and her whole married life was devoted to caring for him and the boys. She was used to being busy and being useful. These latter years proved more difficult for her without this focus. Nevertheless, she adored and was adored by her children, Jonathan and Tim, and her grandchildren, Katy, Alistair and Lucy.
Mum was a selfless, social person, was well known and loved by so many people. We have such fond memories of her.
