My Gt. Uncle Edward was known as a lovely polite young man.
Edward signed up in 1914 & was posted to the 12th Battalion Royal Fusiliers.
He arrived in France & was immediately thrust into the Battle of Loos in 1915.
On the 2nd February 1916 he was hit in the head by shrapnel whilst in Sanctuary Wood in the Ypres Salient.
His mates carried him down the Menin Road to a First Aid Post but died as they got there.
He is buried in Menin Road South Military Cemetery.
His younger brother, William George Swain, was killed in action in 1918.
